Deputy CAO of Lassen County HSS

When goal setting many of us have heard the term, "If you shoot for the moon and miss you still end up among the stars." Striving toward goals even if they are not fully accomplished still elevates us at a higher plateau. Goal setting is never without challenges but as we observe the little girl (pictured) seeking achievable goals with vision and persistence also has merit! Take a moment and ask yourself if you know someone that works with enthusiasm and passion? Are they determined, clear thinking and well organized? Do they set personal and professional goals with timely bench marks to accomplish them? Most of us envision co-workers who are efficient and effective in their daily practices and achieve great outcomes with the people we serve. Let’s all challenge ourselves to fit this profile and look for creative, visionary ways to serve our communities.

In the past, the nine Health and Social Services (HSS) departments used Management By Objectives (MBO) when setting and monitoring goals. This year, the Leadership Team will participate in the UC Davis training for project management and strategic planning. Additional training through UC Davis is also available should the Leadership Team identify other needs. This represents wise use of public resources as we seek ways to strengthen our management decision making when opportunities present themselves and to continuously improve our skills and partnerships with community members. On behalf of a small rural county it’s important to look beyond the small-county-syndrome (too small to create, too small offer services) and to strengthen our local capacities so people receive quality, timely services. Ask the question, “Wouldn’t it be cool if we could?” When considering the efforts of how to achieve goals, just picture the little girl and her dream to touch the door knob. Persistence and a little growth sure pay off!

Sincerely,

Kevin Mannel
Deputy CAO of Health and Social Services
